Summer travel: Fuel taxes and travel snobbery
In the 1950s, when the idea of transatlantic travel was still a novelty, there were those in the media who proclaimed it would lead to a new understanding between nations. Individuals would be able to fly to completely different continents and experience as much or as little of the local customs and culture as they wanted, first-hand. Europeans, ever the great explorers, welcomed the cheaper flights with open arms and set out to re-discover far flung places such as Thailand and Vancouver.
