Should US citizens be allowed to travel to Cuba?

Cuba is a totalitarian police state, which uses repressive methods to maintain control. Apparently there is a concern that these repressive methods of control could be used on foreign travelers to include American citizens.

In my mind that doesn’t justify keeping us from traveling to Cuba. There are dangerous places for Americans everywhere on the planet and a good deal of those places are right here in the United States. Are there travel restrictions on visiting Detroit?

The restriction includes tourist travel to Cuba from or through a third country such as Mexico. According to a Consular information sheet travelers who fail to comply with Department of Treasury regulations will face civil penalties and criminal prosecution upon return to the United States. Read that last sentence again. If you are from Mexico and take up residency in the United States illegally there isn’t much United States law enforcement will do to you as long as you don’t get into trouble, but if you are an American citizen you will be prosecuted for going to Cuba from or through Mexico. Does this make sense? Which government is a totalitarian police state?

I’ve been a lot of places around the world and the truth is if we would treat citizens of the countries we are visiting with a little bit of respect we would be fine. I’ve seen Americans act horribly more than once. As an example I watched a guy buy a beer in Germany using United States dollars and punched the bartender in the face when he didn’t give the guy his change in dollars. Why would anyone expect change in United States currency? Maybe more importantly, why would you hit someone for not having it?

Anyway, I don’t think Cuba is any more dangerous than other places we are free to go to and I think the embargo has outlasted any meaningful purpose.
